iOS 8 Software Update.

iOS 8 Software update.

Another year has passed and we now have a new iOS 8 software update, for many the iOS 7 was great and took them the year to learn all about it, so now on to the iOS 8 software update and things have improved and changed even more. It will be another learning curve for iPhone users.

The iOS 8 software update features are really great. This time whilst the update takes place we get an ‘App’ telling us what the main changes have been and to be honest this really does and will help many users.

A quick glance through each one and you cant but help to be amazed how the features have improved and can see how they would help improve they way you will use the iPhone.

Description of the new features on the iOS 8 Software Update

1 – Quickly respond to a notification. – This feature allows you to directly respond to the message you have received without having to go into the ‘App’ you need to normally use.

2 – Now you can message someone using the speaker to record an audio message.  This could be a great feature for many users.

3 – Managing your emails. The new swipe feature allows you to flag the email on top of the ‘more’ and ‘trash’ options from before.

4 – Siri has improved; this new version can act as a way of identifying a tune wherever you are.

5 – Waiting for that important email reply then on this new feature you can tap the flag to notify you when it arrives in your inbox, rather than having to keep checking yiOS 8 Software Update.our email.

6 – The double clicking feature is still there, when you want to clear unused open ‘Apps’ but now you will see along the top your favourites you have picked from your iPhone. This enables you to get in touch with your favourite people a lot quicker.

7 – When sending messages, you would not be able to see when it was sent on the previous update and this could have been a vital piece of information to many users, but now you can check when the message was sent by dragging the bubble to the left.

8 – If you and all your family are mad about ‘App’s for various things, well this feature allows you to share your  ‘Apps’ with each other.

9 – In an age of imagery we have grown to love ‘selfies’ so the new update now gives you a timer, to continue to take those images without you having to hold the device.

These are the tips that have come with the new update, the ‘App’ will be somewhere on your home screen, worth reading through it and having a play to really understand how your iPhone have improved and how it can help you.

Social media on iOS 7

The new iOS 7 update.

We are now using the new iOS 7 update if you have gone through the software update.

Some tips to help you on your way if you still are waiting to update.

1. Connect your device to the power supply as it will drain your battery if you do it free standing.

2. Make sure you are using Wifi when downloading the new iOS 7 software. It can take between 45mins to an hour and it won’t work sufficiently if you don’t use Wifi. This is a big change to your apple device so it needs time. Your device cannot be used during it so do it when you don’t need it for that length of time.

3. Once ready, the look of it has really changed so start to play around with your apps, plenty of updates to them so you need the time to see what has changed in the new iOS 7 update.

New control centre has been introduced and this is worth looking at. Closing opened “Apps” has also changed, the function is swipe rather than tapping on the cross.

If you are struggling with the new update and just want some tips to help navigate around the new upgrade then please get in touch.

I can help you understand it and show you how it all works. Social Media on iOS 7 will be simpler to understand once you have learnt how it all works.

If you need advise on how to use your devices please contact us. Training given on iPads , iPhones and other tablets.

Twitter as a Aid

Using Twitter used as an Aid.

Earlier in the year, the town of Petworth was held up due to bad weather conditions and because of poor phone signal in the town, many drivers used Social media to get them moving around the area and also to help find what would be the best routes to use in order to get home safely.

How this happened.

Hearing via twitter that many drivers are stuck on major and minor routes between Guildford to Chichester, caused many tweeters to ask local radio stations about updates. Reports of updates were coming out but because of the extreme volume of requests it was hard to respond to each request.

Scrolling through twitter and seeing people asking for help kicked started off virtual help to drivers, whether they were stranded and told were they could go too that was safe or to give road updates to drivers to find the best route to get them home.

Residents in Petworth came out with hot teas and toast to keep people motivated and warm and giving updated information that was coming through via twitter.

Twitter certainly proved to be the best possible social media tool to help people out in a crisis situation. Many new twitter relationships were made and plenty of thanks to all who took it upon themselves to bring drivers home safely.  A minute-by-minute tweet really did help.

I reckon that if this sort of weather impacts our town and area again, twitter as a aid will be the first mode of communication between people. More users are on it and see it for all the great functions Twitter has. Beyond using it for Business it can help assist in crisis situations.

If you want to learn more about Twitter and how it can be used for your business then please contact me and I can give you 1-2-1 lessons at great rates to get you started.

Twitter for Garden Centre

Twitter for Garden Centre customers.

Engaging with Customers.

In the past couple of years I had been working and aiding a well know garden Centre chain near Chichester about how to use social media to enhance their business needs.

Selecting Twitter as the chosen social media tool, the mission was to get the customers of the Garden Centre to engage with Twitter, using QR codes around the shop and outside area helped people to connect with the Garden Centre website, beyond this though the Centre wanted to attract various levels of cliental to use their services.

Twitter Broadcasting.

Targeting parent groups, landscapers, and Charity organisers, events people allowed us to showcase the Garden Centre as a place to be at anytime of the day.

Having parents groups meeting up using the café, as a place to dine and chat with others became a central hub for many parents.

For Landscapers it allowed them to see what is on offer at the moment, or about new product lines. Turf became a popular twitter feed for people as many were wanting it, but found it was sold out when they got to a place, this way the Centre was able to hold turf rolls for customers based on their request via twitter.

When having events in-store or after hours again allowed the Centre to broadcast the event along with an image to a greater audience, rather than not using social media.

The in-house talks have always proved to be popular because of the speaker or the content of the talk, though with a little extra push using Twitter the Centre was able to gain more customers to the talk.

As each season comes and goes, social media plays an active role when trying to gain customers through the door of the Centre.

Twitter Content for Customers.

In the winter informing customers about the need of Bird Food, Hedging and Rock Salt is important, as these are items people rely on beyond what they can do in the garden.

Spring is when the garden blooms, offers on all the containers plants, compost and how it all works together is great information for customers.

Summer is when you can work on cleaning up your hard landscaped surfaces, support systems for climbers, water butts and possibly treat your family to new garden furniture and enjoy BBQ season with the various types of grills on offer.

Autumn is when you can plant your fruit trees, hedging, autumn/winter containers. This allows the customer to enjoy the last few months of the garden before the winter and offers would certainly draw people in.

All of this information can be put out in 140 characters with or without an image and bring customers to your Centre.

Social media training can be applied to any type of business, knowing what you do best and then using Social Media can only enhance it even further.

Social Media taking over Petworth

Social Media taking over Petworth

Petworth businesses embracing Social Media.

In a recent local newspaper article, the headline said “Petworth is taking social media and Twitter by storm”. article in the Midhurst Petworth Observer 17th Aug 2013.

Many businesses in the town were interviewed including myself on how they are using Social Media for their business and also how #Petworthhour is working for them.

#Petworthhour is Virtual Networking.

As the founder of Petworthhour I see it as a way too virtual network with people in and around the area and that you might not necessarily know about or probably might not even meet because of the nature of work you are in. Petworthhour is certainly changing this format of communication between everyone.

Each week as it grows its virtual network I am seeing plenty of craft and creative businesses that want to showcase what they do to the Petworthhour audience. During 8-9pm on Tuesday I not only see what people share on Petworthhour but also on other ‘hours’ that are coming in to play, with Kent, Surrey, Hampshire and even Chickenhour running around 8-9pm it is capturing a wide networking reach.

This is allowing people to connect with whomever they feel they can do business with or might need their services and then set up their own meeting offline.

Is virtual networking taking over – Some might say yes and that the physical meeting is dying out. I believe its an even split, virtual networking only works so far, as it can only capture your audience in 140 character that Twitter allows. Even if you send out multiple messages to target your audience and hope you can make a deal at the end of it the physical meeting is much nicer if you enjoy these sorts of events. It allows you to sell your business beyond 140 characters and also meet people in the flesh.

Having built a relationship up via twitter or any kind of social media will ultimately draw you to wanting to meet the person behind the business. The ice has been broken so the nervous first meeting should not be there.

The momentum of Petworthhour is growing now into its 4 month, I encourage and invite anyone near or far to take part and share what they do, offer and provide. We are one of only a few towns that have set up a ‘town based hour’ so if we can be in line with Kent, Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire that would be really fantastic and the only way to achieve this is through more business joining in each Tuesday night at 8pm.

Embracing Social media for your business is a positive aspect, without it you will not be able to make your connections go further, email and word of mouth only go so far, though at some point social media will be needed, so get on it sooner rather than later.

If you need help with setting up a Twitter account so that you can join in then please contact me and I can help you with this. Follow me on @HRDSocialMedia

Social Media Business Pages

Your business through social media business pages.

Why do I need a business page?

Noticing more and more as businesses are joining up with Facebook and alike and creating a page for their business.

Though what I’m seeing is that they sign up just like we all do for anything on the internet and instead of using there real names they are creating a profile page using a business name. I understand that you may not want to be found by your name but for your business instead, but the first step is where you are unfortunately falling at by using a personal profile page as a business page.

In order to have the best possible page and to be able to use it successfully you need to have a personal page to able to help create your business page. I can help you with this process and advise you on the best way to create your business page.

If you use your personal page for your business you will start to see traffic from your friends posts on your page which then can start to look unprofessional and not drive new or existing clients/customers to you again.

It is very important to keep this separate. Facebook seems to be the main social media tool that most people do this with. I understand why, currently it is the most popular and well used by people  for personal and business and is easy to use by most people.

Beyond Facebook, Google+ and LinkedIn also allow you to have a business page and personal profile, though as they are not as well used by people and also have a different perception by people it doesn’t fail like Facebook does.

To help sort out the difference or to help set up and understand your business pages on all social media tools, please get in touch. Get it right for the first step so that the work applied is not lost later on.

Using your Smart Phone for Social Media.

iOS and Android phones for Personal and Social Media use.

Dealing with Issues about your smart phone.

I have noticed during my time with clients that they struggle to use their smart phones beyond what they only know or have been told to do from the shop they brought it from, they seem to pay for a device that doesn’t get used to its fullest capabilities.

Recently I have started offering a service whereby I can help you understand your smart phone. I have dealt with both types iOS and Android devices. Samsung, LG and iPhone.

Working along side the client we have restored phone back to factor settings once connected to a Laptop or PC, which allows it to back up any information that maybe on it at that time. This helps the phone to work even better for you, allowing space for new apps, music photos or any documents you may want to use on your phone.

Starting to use a phone from new is also a service I have dealt with, from the stages of inserting the sim card to understanding the operations of the phone. Providing the clients access to their personal emails and also moving froward to Social media.

I have been told many times by my clients that not using their smart phone correctly is the ‘first hurdle they fall at’, well that doesn’t need to happen anymore, I can help solve these issues and get you to understand all the capabilities of your phone.

I myself am an iPhone user and find many clients are also Apple product people, I love the intuitive design and layout of the phone and also understand how powerful it truly is when in perfect operation.

Using your Smart Phone for Social Media.

Why I’m a Mac User from being a PC user

The debate about one over the other. What are your thoughts and how well do you know your Mac or PC.

I, like most people have always used a PC, since getting to grips with modern day technology, I started to use and understanding all the Microsoft programs that go along with a PC and also the design programs that also operate on a PC, like AutoCAD, but in the last few years I have been learning all about how to use a Mac Book and other Apple devices and I have to say that there is so much to learn if you want to get the best out of your device. Using these new applications in Social media has been very easy for me, Apple devices really work well with Twitter, Facebook and alike, the ‘Apps’ from iTunes are intuitive and easy to install, having the Mac Book just enhances all of this together seemlessly I truly believe that!

social media Apple resize

“Once you go Mac you don’t go back”

From the moment you open your new Mac Book or Apple device you are in love, its Apple’s way of making it look sexy, well it certainly does do that. Depending on when you get your devices, it will feel like Christmas each time.

Beyond the appeal of the product you have to start understanding how a Mac works, the commands are different which at first can be frustrating and also not knowing how to bring up symbols that are not apparent, e.g. a  hashtag when using it for Twitter. Most people are use to using a mouse when operating a PC, with a Mac its best not too, the touch pad is all you need, but again it take some time to understand it as it works based on how many fingers you use to move around the screen.

I do miss my old PC from the ease of how I know it works from my many years of using it and still work with them when meeting with clients during our social media session. I understand its not for everyone so its important to weight up the Pros and Cons on a Mac or PC if you are trying to choose one. Major factors can be cost and it is a important one, Mac’s tend to me more expensive over a PC brand new but the advantages over the years you may have your Mac could be more cost effective in the long run.

Social Media Training.

Training is given on your devices and also the various tablets that can accompany a Mac or PC. These are the tools you need when using social media for your business needs. I also deal with clients who want to learn about their devices and happy to advise on basic IT information.

IT Advise

From understanding your Outlook with emails, Microsoft programs, backing up your work/content to a external hard drive or iCloud. Performing updates and software updates, cleaning up how you store information from downloading content to Data recovery if that occurs. These are some of the elements I can help with if you need my service outside of social media.

Popular Social Networking Site.

Social Media Networking Sites.

The debate begins with which social media site do you most use.?

Are you a tweeter, or facebooker or google plus newbie. Which ever you use or enjoy, they are have their merit in the social media world.

Facebook has grown from being a place to find your old friends and make new ones to creating business pages and groups. Now people are advertising things to sell to the local community which is proving really well for everyone who joins in. Overall it is a great way of discovering what people are up and to be able to enjoy multiple photos of family, holiday snaps and more. Also you are able to create events which helps co-ordinate everyone in one place, updated information so that people are in the know. All these roles of Facebook replace so many parts of my daily routine. This could be a good or bad depending on how you use it all. Find me on Facebook

Twitter has become a tool that I believe will take over from Facebook soon enough, it function in a different way completely so there is a need for both for your business, although I feel that Twitter helps to capture something in an instant which Facebook still struggles to do. More and more you see during a TV shows information about Twitter rather than Facebook and this is probably for the reason already mentioned. With so much information available on Twitter it is no wonder why people really do enjoy tweeting. Tweet with me on HRDSocialMedia

Google+ is very popular in the States and is making its way over to the UK. With Google being its parent I can see how this might be the social media of the future. Using and learning about it stages will be the best way to learn all about Google+, a very intuitive format which has an element of Facebook to it, whilst also allowing you to be able to create circles of friends which can identify friends from business contacts. I firmly things that Google+ is watch this space.

LinkedIn and Pinterest are the other two that are also popular with people, each again have their own criteria, LinkedIn is a place which allows you to add information about yourself to be seen by people who may be looking for you in a job role, or a place to find others like yourself to make a connection with. More recently you can start to create a business page, similar to the Facebook business page.

Pinterest is a creative site, its all about fantastic images showcasing your interests, this is a good way to catalogue ideas or stock if you have various elements to your business. Great way to see others who post images about their work and for you to like and connect back to your page.

These are my most used and favourite at the moment, plenty more social media sites out there to use and learn about. So if you could rank your order what order would it be.

1 – Twitter, 2- Facebook, 3- LinkedIn, 4- Google+, 5 – Pinterest.

Using Twitter on your Smartphone/Tablet

Smartphones & Tablets over a PC/Laptop on Twitter.

How do you use Twitter?

The Functions on Twitter.

Do you sit at your PC or Laptop and filter through to find out who has tweeted with you or you want to tweet with. Clicking through each of the tabs to figure all this out.

The ‘Home’ tab showing you all the tweets that have come in from all who you are following and from your followers who are retweeting their followers which then show up on your home feed.

The ‘Connect’ tabs shows you all your interactions and mentions that have come through, allowing you to pin down who is tweeting with you. You will be able to understand if they have conversed with you, retweeted or favourited your tweet.

The ‘Discover’ tab is what is breaking on twitter, a collection of information from people who are talking about the same thing as you. This can lead to something you are interested in to potential trend depending on how much interaction it has.

The ‘Me’ tab is the front page of your twitter profile, it shows you your profile information, the combinations of tweets and retweets you may have sent out, images that you may have attached to your tweets and also a suggestion of who to follow and what is currently trending.

Using Twitter on your Smartphone or Tablet.

All this is valuable information when using your PC or Laptop but I find that using a smartphone or tablet can provide you with even more functions that you are not able to from a static machine.

One of the best functions I tend to use often is to ‘Quote’ a tweet, the option comes up when you want to retweet something you like, but ‘Quoting’ has become a common usage for me as it allows you to keep a conversation to grow, although you will start to lose characters depending on how long the tweet it.

I find that when Im conducting Petworthhour on tuesday evenings at 8pm, I need to use the ‘Quote’, reason being if someone has tweeting and not use the hash tag Petworthour as one word, then I am able to change this and reply back to them to keep the conversation going.

Many times you can see a tweet that has not reached to people correctly and using this functions allows you to amend this which then will reach the person who it was attended for.

The double tapping of the ‘Home’ button is also a fantastic function as if you are not on your twitter feed 24/7 then you will have a lot of swishing to do to get back to the top of the most recent tweet, double tapping takes away the laborious task of doing this. Once to the top you can scroll back down to see what you may have missed, but its better that way then they trying to scroll upwards.

The last great function when you using a smart phone or tablet has to be, switching between accounts, if you have a personal and business account or if you are in charge of looking after more than one account, the switching between them all is clean and easy.  If you used a PC/Laptop you would have to log out each time and then log back in and tweet away, when wanting to do something in an instant I would find using a PC really annoying and prefer the smartphone/tablet option.

Would this encourage you to use your smartphone or tablet over your PC, maybe, especially if you want to capture something in an instant, that is the beauty of it, take a pic and tweet it all in one motion. The sign of the times really!.
